inauguration at the end of 2013. While it has expanded its permanent collection, it now offers two main “attractions”: a maritime navigation simulation and a 3D storm box.
Through the maritime and river angle, the exhibition traces the history of coastal peoples, the slave trade, German and British colonization and the post-colonial period.
A downside: if he exhibits many objects from yesterday’s marine
universe (sextan, foghorn…) and today, he fishes because of the low presence of elements of Cameroonian artisanal fishing.
Maritime Museum of Douala

The museum occupies only 400 m2 of this magnificent land liner. The roof offers a beautiful view of the Wouri River, the port of
Douala and former colonial buildings that have now been converted into courts, prefecture or or orphanages. A small souvenir shop has been set up at the entrance. Come to Musee Maritime de Douala to learn about the naval culture of Cameroon. See several collections displaying artifacts, photographs, nautical charts, and even animated exhibits. Aside from learning about the country’s maritime history, you can also find out how and where commerce developed in Cameroon. The museum offers guided tours for those who want to observe and learn at the same time.
DAY 2: DOUALA: Douala City Tour (40KMS / 7HRS)
ST Peter and Paul Cathedral

Located opposite the Mbappe Lepe stadium, the Cathedral of St Peter and
Paul Bonadibong is a very nice place to visit in Douala. An imposing Roman
Catholic Cathedral, typical of neo-roman architecture, with two twin towers
surround the central front. Built in 1936, the Cathedral of Douala is actually
an important piece of the historical monuments of Cameroon, based on the
legacy of the fathers Pallotins
Maritime Museum of Douala
Built by the famous Prince Dika Akwa Nya Bonambella, this architectural masterpiece ushered in a new era in Douala: that of opulent castles. The palace is a homogeneous synthesis of Cameroonian diversity: the western door is decorated with a Bamiléké hut and the two-headed snake, the “arms” of the Bamoun; the northern door represents a boukarou, the southern a Béti hut, and the eastern a maka hut. The Dika Akwa palace is a
major venue for the annual Ngondo celebration, among other traditional ceremonies.

Liberty Monument

La Nouvelle Liberté (the new statue of liberty) is a public artwork by Joseph Francis Sumegne located in the roundabout Deido in Douala and commissioned and produced by by doual’art in 1996. An impressive twelve meter monumental metal sculpture produced with recycled materials and positioned in the main roundabout of the neighborhood of Deïdo. This monument was set up in downtown Douala in2007. This unusual art has come to represent the hustle of the city. Douala’s iconic
statue has braved controversy to become the symbol of the city. Made out of scrap metal and junk, the statue at Rond Point Deido represents the people’s will to reinvent themselves.

First World War memorial

Limbe, also is known as Victoria, is an OPEC city founded by British Alfred Saker in 1858. It’s a seaside resort for tourists due to its beautiful beach, nightlife, attractions and climate. It sits at the foot of Mt Cameroon and hosts the Cameroon Development Cooperation (CDC), which is the second biggest employer (25000 employees) in the country after the government. The
Cameroon Oil refinery (SONARA) is also located here.
Major touristic attractions are the Limbe Botanical Gardens, Limbe Wildlife Center, Down beach fish market etc.
The city of Limbe has beautiful Botanic Gardens, which is the second-best garden in Africa. It was created in 1892 by Dr. Paul Preuss, (a German Horticulturist). The Botanic Garden is a gateway to the riches of the Mount Cameroon region, an area
internationally classified among the world’s biodiversity environments. It was used for the introduction and acclimatisation of exotic plants with economic and medicinal value. Lying at the foothill of Mount Cameroon, the Limbe Botanic Garden provides a peaceful web of attractions in its refreshing garden like the jungle village, the British Commonwealth memorial war graves, splendid trees and an ideal haven for
relaxation under the natural canopies.

The Garden harbours several floras of which more than 100 species are unique to the Mount Cameroon region. The Botanic Garden is accessible throughout the year and there are trained nature interpretive guidesto make your visit very interesting.

The Commonwealth War Graves

Black Sand Down Beach Limbe

Limbe is famous for its stunning black sand beaches (lava sands from the Mt Cameroon eruptions, the mountain towering only a few dozen miles inland). The best stretch of beach is perhaps in the Limbe suburb of Bobende, where the crescent of beautiful black and dark brown sand faces the open Atlantic Ocean (with oil platforms towering in far distance). While pretty and scenic, it’s still quite dirty with trash coming both from inland and washed out by the ocean, a problem pretty much anywhere along the African Atlantic coast. Excessive use of plastics with zero recycling or trash collection is a real problem in Africa – most people treat their country as a trash can throwing stuff out pretty much anywhere.
Bimbia Slave Trade Site
Slave trade port Bimbia – memorial site
Bimbia Slave port, the largest slave trade site in all central Africa, is situated at the Eastcoast of the Limbe sub-division, it was the first place white-men, the Jamaican and English Baptist missionaries led by Rev. Alfred Saker set foot on the Cameroon shores in 1858, after Fernando Po. You can find Slavery Artifacts, Prison for recalcitrant slaves.

This is an amazing waterfalls charged with a lot of history. The legend has it that the Metché Waterfalls derive their reputation from colonial times.
This is the place where the French colonial army used to throw Cameroonians who were opposition to their system into the waterfalls during the dark years of Cameroon. During the period of independence between 1955 and 1967, some Cameroonian nationalists were thrown there by the French army and loyalist forces.
On September 12, 1959, Jacob Fossi, detained, was thrown there by gendarmes. As he falls, he clings to André Houtarde, a French gendarme on duty in Bafoussam.
Both disappear and searches over several days do not allow the body of the French to be found. That day marked the end of the execution of prisoners in this place. The rebels also killed people in this place in the decade 1961-1971.
Today, these waterfalls are a place of pilgrimage to those who lost loved ones. The place has become a site of purification. The populations there perform ritual ceremonies that wash away bad spells. These rituals, proper to the Bamileke People, allow them to connect with ancestors, ask for purification and seek their protection and intercession.

Reunification Monument

The Monument of Reunification is rich in symbolism, providing insight into Cameroon’s history. At first glance, the monument depicts a statue of an old man holding five children in his arms while holding the national torch, symbolizing freedom. The fact that the old man carries the torch and not the children is significant – it represents the old man’s role in passing on Cameroon’s cultural heritage and lighting the path from tradition to modernity. The children surrounding the old man represent equal opportunities for both boys and girls in the nation. the shape of the main monument is a spiral cone, representing two snakes whose heads unite at the top, symbolizing the two parts of Cameroon that have become one. On the left side of the structure, you can see the outline of Cameroon’s map. Beneath the monument, there are four pillars with engravings depicting the daily lives of people from Cameroon’s five cultural areas (hunting, fishing, sorcery masks, education, and harvests).
In conclusion, the Monument of Reunification is an essential part of Cameroon’s history and cultural heritage. It reminds us to
stay united and work together to build a prosperous and emerging Cameroon, showcasing the diversity of its people.
